Recharging people, not just devices

In an ultra-connected world, the boundaries between private life and work are blurring. Hyper connection insidiously sets in, fuels stress and exhausts individuals. Being always available is detrimental to mental health and reduces long-lasting performance. However, it is often by stopping that we become more efficient and more lucid.

According to Mental Health Research Canada’s 2024 survey[1], 24% of Canadian employees report experiencing burnout “most of the time” or “always.” This figure is alarming. It reflects the direct impact of limitless connectivity.

1. The right to disconnect: a legal and human imperative

The right to disconnect protects workers outside of working hours. Companies need to frame expectations with clear policies. With Law 25 and Law 27 in Quebec, organizations are required to limit access to digital tools outside of work hours, train their teams and actively prevent psychosocial risks.

2. Respect the disconnection to perform better

You know the expression, “Have you tried turning it off and on again?” This principle also applies to humans, especially in the context of cognitive overload. Promoting disconnection improves concentration, reduces stress, and boosts mental clarity. Set up screen-free breaks and limit back-to-back meetings. Set up time slots without email and clearly communicate your availability expectations. These simple actions promote a healthier and more efficient work environment.

HR best practices to create a culture of disconnection

  1. Respect a clear charter on the right to disconnect (hours, response times to messages, availability to take calls, etc.).
  2. Encourage rituals of transition between work and personal life.
  3. Measure the impact of actions through internal surveys or well-being indicators.

Conclusion: When recharging becomes strategic

At Iceberg Management, we believe in the power of collective breaks. That’s why we have designed a joint offer with Strøm Nordic Spa, the most prestigious Nordic spa in Quebec. An experience combining disconnected relaxation with a flagship workshop on stress management, designed to strengthen team cohesion. A solution that kills two birds with one stone to combine business with pleasure. Science proves it[2]: rested teams perform better, together.
